The correction of Gynecomastia (or enlarged male breasts) primarily involves the reduction of glandular, fatty tissue through surgical removal. This technique is used in conjunction with liposuction of any surrounding fatty tissue to achieve an ideal result. As male breasts can be a source of embarrassment and discomfort for men, gynecomastia correction can achieve a flatter, more masculine chest by reducing the unwanted fat and excess glandular tissue often seen in an enlarged male breast. Gynecomastia correction can also positively impact an individual’s psychosocial well-being. Each case is unique and is evaluated on an individual basis by Dr. Markarian. Conditions in Gynecomastia may range from something as minimal as having “puffy” nipples, to a more significant condition such as developing a C- or D-cup sized breast. The treatment plan and results a patient can expect will differ depending on the situation.  During your initial consultation with Dr. Markarian, he will thoroughly discuss the pros and cons of gynecomastia surgery, along with the results that can be expected. His surgical insight and innovative techniques in male breast reduction (gynecomastia) help men feel more confident with their bodies.

The goals of male breast reduction (Gynecomastia surgery) are to reduce unwanted fat and excess glandular tissue, to relieve physical discomfort associated with large breasts, and to achieve a firmer, flatter more masculine chest.

Dr Markarian will personalize your procedure – no two patients’ goals and bodies are alike; in each consultation, Dr. Markarian will individualize his detailed technical assessment with a thorough personal discussion of your expectations and motivations. He firmly believes an individual approach yields the best results and will work with you to plan a healthy and successful procedure outcome.  Dr. Markarian’s patients benefit from his expertise in a full complement of breast reduction techniques. He implements these precise techniques to reduce necessary breast volume while minimizing unsightly breast scarring. When correcting male chest enlargement, the amount of fatty tissue in the male breast plays a critical role in determining the type of procedure. Dr. Markarian’s primary methods for treating male chest enlargement include surgical excision or Suction-Assisted Lipectomy (also known as Liposuction).

  • Surgical Excision: When excising the excess breast tissue, a small incision is made about half the diameter of the areola. Excision is required with firm and glandular gynecomastia tissue and works great when there is a small and well-demarcated and circumscribed gynecomastia mass under the areola. When fat is spread throughout the chest, excision alone is insufficient and liposuction is required.
  • Suction-Assisted Lipectomy (SAL): In SAL, tumescent fluid is injected into the area to be treated. A tiny incision is then made in an inconspicuous location, and the fat layer is suctioned out. SAL effectively treats breasts that are composed of primarily fatty tissue.

Male breast reduction (gynecomastia) surgery is performed under general anesthesia, meaning you will be completely asleep and feel nothing during surgery. The surgery takes a few hours, although you should expect to spend extra time in the operating room if your procedure will focus on multiple areas. The surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, but some patients prefer an overnight stay.
